Lutein
Lutein is an antioxidant that naturally occurs in fruits and vegetables and can also be found in eggs. It is an important element in maintaining your child's eye health. Lutein is a carotenoid, a brightly colored pigment that gives plants and vegetables their bright and vivid colors. Lutein and other carotenoids such as beta-carotene and lycopene are known for their antioxidant properties as they help your child’s body eliminate the effects of free radicals that are created by their bodies’ natural oxidation. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, lutein helps absorb blue light waves in the eye, and “reducing the amount of blue light that reaches the critical visual structures of the eye may protect them from light-induced oxidative damage.” This is particularly important for kids, who spend plenty of time outside without sunglasses.*

Zeaxanthin
Zeaxanthin is a bioflavonoid (or flavonoid), which is a type pigment found in almost all herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Bioflavonoids provide the body with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection. Zeaxanthin belongs to a group of bioflavonoids known as carotenoids, a group that is further subdivided into two groups: carotenes and xanthophylls. Zeaxanthin is one of the xanthophylls, which are found most abundantly in dark, leafy green vegetables, and are crucial to the good health of the eyes. The retina of the eye actually contains a lot of zeaxanthin, which is why it is so important to include this carotenoid in your diet. Zeaxanthin helps protect the eye from ultra-violet (UV) damage, and prevents free-radical damage to the retina and the lens of the eye that is associated with diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma.*

Beta-Carotene
Beta-carotene is a pigment found in plants that gives them their color.  In the body, beta-carotene converts into vitamin A (retinol). We need vitamin A for good vision and eye health, for a strong immune system, and for healthy skin and mucous membranes. Your body only converts as much vitamin A from beta-carotene as it needs. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant. It protects the body from damaging molecules called free radicals. Free radicals damage cells through a process known as oxidation. Over time, this damage can lead to a number of chronic illnesses. There is good evidence that getting more antioxidants from foods or nutritional supplements can help boost your immune system.*
